Bridge Builder Recipient, Betsy Buchanan, RD, LD WIC Program Director Supervising Dietitian Cincinnati Health Department
Betsy Buchanan is a registered dietitian who has worked with WIC (Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children) since 1990. She joined the Cincinnati Health Department WIC Program in 1994. During this time she has worked in the program as a dietitian, breastfeeding coordinator and director, all of which offer opportunities to carry out WIC’s mission to improve overall health to at risk families.
Betsy completed her education at the Ohio State University with a degree in Medical Dietetics. She has since received training as a lactation counselor. She is invested in the promotion of breastfeeding; where WIC has incorporated the breastfeeding peer program, classes, pumps for moms and breastfeeding specialists. She is passionate about the WIC Program because of the educational component it provides for families, the supplemental foods and the interaction with other agencies to assist families to a healthier life.
